Last week I went on a four-day press trip to Vorarlberg, the most western part of Austria. I fell in love with the region and I am definitely coming back. Here's a bit of my travel diary...
We left Prague at 7 am in the morning, heading towards Munich. We were lucky not to get into any serious traffic jam, so we could reach our first destination, Lech am Arlberg, around 2 pm. We stayed in the lovely Hotel Gotthard first two days and had our first lunch there - fillets of char with parsley potatoes! Delicious.
After changing to hiking clothes (which I didn't have, so I spent the whole four days in my blue converse shoes, which amused everyone so much) we set up for our first hike - a trip on the footsteps of the Walser people.
Our first stop was Bürstegg, where we could grab a sip of local "moscht". The very old hut and chapel are reminders of the former inhabitants.
The funny thing are the cows. In the whole Vorarlberg there must be millions of cows, each with its own bell around the neck. And it forms such a beautiful orchestra in the mountains! Sometimes, they stand so close to a rock edge it can't even be possible. The animals there seem to be so happy. We agreed we would switch the job with them - just eating and relaxing all day :)
After the "moscht" stop we descended down to the valley ("hey, I know a shortcut," our mountain guide yelled... well it was more of a deathcut to me :) so steep and the grass wet, so I was afraid of my life :)) to get dinner in Bodenalpe - this 400 years old farm can be accessed only in summer, since in winter it is all covered in snow.
We got some starters, like fresh goat cheese and venison ham, and then gröstl - local typical food. I have to find a recipe for that, it is wonderful! Beef, speck, potatoes, mushrooms and parsley. Such simple ingredients, but together it creates heaven.
One can sleep good afterwards :) especially after half-an-hour hot bath, so you can't feel your leg muscles screaming for help.
